Moving House Checklist: 8 Steps You Must Have

A checklist turns a chaotic move into a series of small jobs. Use these eight steps, from the day you get the keys to the day you unpack the last box, and adapt them to your own timeline.

1. Research your next move

2. Survey your home and declutter

Walk through each room and decide what to keep, sell, donate or throw out. The less you move, the less you pay. Once you know your load, request quotes from removalists. Ask what is included, what insurance applies, and check reviews.

3. Hire your removalists

Book a removalist and confirm the date, arrival window, crew size and price in writing. Order packing supplies or book packing services if you want help. If you need storage, ask now.

4. Prepare to relocate

Book any extra help you need, such as cleaners, carpet cleaners or a handyman. Start using up perishable food, and plan meals around what is in the freezer.

5. Update your address and get organised

Notify your bank, employer, insurer, utilities, internet provider and the electoral roll. Set up mail redirection. Keep important documents, passports and valuables with you, not on the truck. Return anything you have borrowed, and collect all keys for handover.

6. Prepare to leave your old home

Do a final clean and walk-through. Pack an essentials bag with chargers, medication, toiletries, a change of clothes, snacks and tools. Charge your phone, confirm keys for the new property and check parking for the truck at both addresses.

7. Moving day: lock up and go

Be present when the crew arrives. Point out fragile items and tell the crew where things go. Check that all windows are closed and utilities are off. Make sure the crew has your phone number and the new address, and check the truck is empty before it leaves.

8. Check your new property

Inspect for damage, cleanliness and any items left by the previous owner. Photograph any issues. Check your belongings against your inventory and report any damage promptly, since our terms require claims to be made within 24 hours of delivery.
