Most full-size tables have a timber frame, a slate bed made of one or three pieces, a cloth, rubber cushions and legs. The slate is heavy and brittle. It is the reason most damage happens during a move.

1. Remove the pockets and cushions, and take the cloth off if needed
2. Unscrew the slate from the frame, marking the position of each piece
3. Lift the slate flat, with padding and enough hands, and load it upright or flat on a padded base as appropriate
4. Take the frame apart and wrap the timber and legs

Reassembly and levelling

At the new address the frame is rebuilt, the slate is placed and shimmed until it is dead level, and a new cloth is fitted if required. Levelling matters: a small slope changes how balls roll.
